Henllys 50 Years Of History

Following the formation of Llantarnam Lodge No 7091 in 1964, the formation of a second Lodge in Cwmbran was first raised in a letter dated March 8th 1964 from the Worshipful Master of Llantarnam Lodge, W. Bro Roy Davies of Ty Coch Farm, Llantarnam. Cwmbran

At that time Llantarnam was the only Lodge in the area and was growing in popularity, the waiting list for new initiates being over two years. The response from the Provincial Secretary Walter Smith was swift and unequivocal: “The Provincial Grand Master Roderick Hill DSO, JP, MA states he is prepared to   envisage a second Lodge in Cwmbran in 3 years’ time” Patience being the only option, there was no official mention of a proposed second Lodge until a further communication two years later from Walter Smith Provincial Secretary to W. Bro Roy Davies on September 21st 1966.

The Provincial Secretary expressed his concern that whilst dining at the Llantarnam Installation Dinner a member of the Lodge had stated emphatically that the new Lodge would be formed in Cwmbran the following year.  W. Bro Roy Davies is reminded in no uncertain terms that the PGM had stated that he was only prepared to consider a second Lodge in Cwmbran and that there could be: “No question of the founding of a second Lodge until his sanction has been obtained.”

On January 21st 1968 W. Bro Tom Till wrote, as required, to the Provincial Secretary to formally outline the reasons for the requirement of a new Lodge and named the principle officers.

On February 19th 1968, W. Bro Roy Davies received confirmation that the PGM was now prepared to give his consent to the forming of a second Lodge in Cwmbran.  The warrant was issued on March 12th 1969 at a cost of £13.13s.  Formal confirmation was given on March 14th 1969 that the paperwork for the United Grand Lodge of England was complete and the name of the new Lodge was agreed as ‘Henllys 8283’.
